The Four Levels of Learning

A week or so ago I saw a blog post from Rick Sammon, a photographer who blog I read, whose podcast I listen to, and who I learn a lot from. He listed the four levels of learning as related to photography and I wanted to share them here:

  1. Unconscious Incompetence - We think we are kinda good.
  2. Conscious Incompetence - We know we need help.
  3. Conscious Competence - We know we are good.
  4. Unconscious Competence - The level we all want to reach in the things we care passionately about. We don’t really have to think too much about what we are doing . . . we just do it!
I think I fall into Category #2. I have a LONG way to to and a LOT to learn!  What category do you see yourself in? What do you think of this progression? I'd love to hear in the comments!

Really interesting - definitely some food for thought. I'd say I've just recently entered stage 3, but at the same time I feel there is still much that I can learn. I don't think I'll ever stop learning something new with photography. I get bored easily, so I'm almost constantly looking for new techniques to learn!

Thanks for sharing this!

By the way, when are you going to be a guest photographer on my blog? ;)

Mom - I'd say you are more a 2 pushing toward a 3. Give yourself more credit! :)

Jess - The world of photography is constantly evolving, especially with digital. Just a new piece of software changes how I process photos and the results that I get. I think anyone who falls in category 3 or 4 has to keep learning or eventually they fall back to category 1 or 2.

I still haven't forgotten about being a guest photographer on your blog :) I just have to find the right photo! I think I'll make it a point to pick one from my next shoot. I'll be in touch :)

Thanks, Jo! What brings you to Sicily? Is this your home country or are you from somewhere else?
