Sweet Simplicity

For this week's Photo of the Week (hosted by Jessica Rogers Photography) I bring you a single stem of Lavender.

Sweet Simplicity in a Single Stem
Lavender from my garden, sitting in a window sill, catching the soft afternoon light. I had a bit of Photoshop fun with this image using OnOne's PhotoFrame to apply the texture and flourish.

Have a beautiful weekend!

California Missions - Part 3

Last weekend during my camping trip near Monterey, CA I took some time to photograph the San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission as part of my personal project to photograph each of the California Missions. Although this is only the third mission I've explored, camera in hand, it was my favorite! The colors and textures reminded me a lot of Italy.

The first photo I'd like to share was also submitted as part of Photo of the Week (hosted by Jessica Rogers Photography).

Rustic Carmel
San Carlos Borromeo Mission was founded in Monterey on June 3, 1770 by Father Junipero Sera and Don Gaspar De Portolá. On August 24, 1771, Father Serra moved the Mission from Monterey to its present site in Carmel to distance it from the military presence at the Presidio of Monterey. The original structure was made of mud and wood and later rebuilt by the Ohlone Native Americans in adobe brick.

In the early 1800's the Mission was destroyed by Privateer Hipolito Bouchard and was left in ruins until Father Angel Cassanova began to restore it in 1884. Renovations continue today to preserve this historic landmark. (http://www.carmelmission.org/museum/students/history.php, http://www.montereycountyweekly.com/bestof/2010/around-town/)

An intriguing cemetery with abalone shells marking each grave

The day that I visited the mission there were back to back weddings being held in the sanctuary.  I was able to sneak in for a couple of minutes between ceremonies, but because there were so many people around I didn't get many photos.  Still, from the two I have here you can tell it is gorgeous. Hopefully one day I'll be able to return and explore the interior more thoroughly.

I hope you enjoyed a glimpse of the San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission through my viewfinder. If you've missed my early posts on the California Missions series check them out here:

Keys Creek Lavender Farm

Last weekend my hubbie and I took a drive north to Valley Center and the Keys Creek Lavender Farm. What a beautiful place! The farm is open during the blooming season (until July 10, 2011) and there is no entrance fee.  You can wander field after field of Lavender in all shades of purple and watch the bees do their work. The farm also has a store where you can buy all manner of Lavender products and a tea house with treats such as Lavender Lemonade and Lavender Scones (I highly recommend both).

This week's Photo of the Week (hosted by Jessica Rogers Photography) was taken while I was wandering the Lavender fields.

Here are a few more photos from our visit:

Another bee, hard at work

I love the curve of the path and the shades of purple in this field

If you are in San Diego between May & July check out Keys Creek Lavender Farm.  Its a little off the beaten path but worth the effort!  You can find them at:

Pretty in Pink

Last weekend my mom and I spent a day wandering Balboa Park, cameras in hand. We spent a lot of time inside the botanical gardens photographing all sorts of beautiful flowers.  Today I'd like to share a few of my favorites, all in shades of pink. The first shot is also my Photo of the Week (hosted by Jessica Rogers Photography).

Reflections

I have a few more photos from that day to sort through - I think I found Alice's Wonderland in the botanical gardens. Curious? Check back soon! I hope to have those photos ready to share in the next couple of days. Until then, have a great Friday and fun-filled weekend!

June Gloom

Most people, when they think about San Diego, they picture sunny days at the beach. However, those who visit during June are often a bit disappointed to find that the fog often lingers through the day and the cool breeze sometime necessitates a sweatshirt. Its called June Gloom - and I love it!

California beach fog is awesome.  Anywhere else in the world (at least those places I've visited) fog is just visible humidity. I recall waking up one morning during the early Fall in Sicily and seeing a blanket of fog covering the valley where I lived.  I was ecstatic, especially after the scorching summer.  I ran around and opened the windows and waited for the cool breeze to hit.  Instead, within minutes I could feel my feet sticking to the tile floor because of the moisture in the air.  Not fog, just visible humidity. Yuck.

I remember feeling the same way when I lived in Florida - no cool breeze, just humidity. I can't tell you how happy I was to get back to California, roll down the windows on the car and feel the cool breeze coming off of the ocean!

I love California beach fog - cool enough for a sweatshirt, warm enough for flip-flops. It doesn't get much better.  Today I took a drive up through Encinitas to Swami's Park overlooking the beach. I relished the cool breeze, the sounds of the crashing waves and the calls of the seagulls. It was anything but gloomy.

As much as I miss Italy I sure do love California and its beach fog!

Pincushions

Flowers - not the sewing kind.

My hubbie bought them for me at the farmer's market in Little Italy this morning.  Aren't they gorgeous?

Wildflower Hunting

This week's Photo of the Week (hosted by Jessica Rogers Photography) is from a trip my mom & I took awhile back to hunt for wildflowers.  It was still a bit early in the season but we found some gorgeous lupines and poppies.

Busy Bee

I had a great time playing with my mom's macro lens...would love to have my own...one of these days... :) Anyhow, I'm not usually one for bugs, not my favorite creatures at all, until I had a macro lens on my camera! I was crawling around on the ground, dodging cow patties, all for a great shot of a flower with a bee.  I lucked out with the photo above. I was taking photos of this poppy and the bee just happened to land in my shot!!

Here are a few of the other lovely fiori (flowers in Italian) that I found that day:

Have a lovely long weekend!!

Around the Napa Valley

Its been nearly two weeks since I was in the Napa Valley.  My hubbie & I spent a week up there, visiting family, eating fabulous food, and I even got to sneak off for awhile and take a few pictures.  Here are a few of my favorites:

I'm glad that I got a chance to take off on my own to shoot at least one afternoon while I was there.  I had a blast driving the tiny roads that cross between the Napa Valley's two main arteries (Hwy 29 and Silverado Trail) It is such a beautiful place!
